The Storia project seeks to address equitable community development by enhancing access to and elevating the status of civic spaces throughout the city of New Orleans. It is designed to cultivate and develop a unified network of small and large civic space projects throughout the city’s neighborhoods. Storia is aimed at providing a process and platform for communities and organizations to create spaces that honor their stories and focus on building the connections and capacity of residents to support the community’s aspirations for benefiting the neighborhood.
CONCEPT DESIGN
Storia: Delta is a storytelling installation that explores ecological displacement, highlighting the relationship between human movement and the city’s shifting landscape. Located at the intersection of Bayou St. John and the Lafitte Greenway, it serves as a physical and mental bridge, connecting us to the past, present, and future. The design is inspired by nature’s cycles, mirroring the Mississippi River’s changing path over time, with the bridge’s ribs shrinking and expanding as you walk through.
The bridge features tiles that serve dual purposes: offering protection from sun and wind while also illustrating human-environment connections. These tiles, created through collaboration with Friends of the Lafitte Greenway, Community Design Advocates, and local artists, focus on the theme of ecological displacement. Organized into five sections—Leaves, 1938, Current, 1907, and Land—the tiles tell stories of land use, Indigenous knowledge, and New Orleans' history. This installation encourages reflection on where we’ve come from, where we are, and where we’re headed in our relationship with the environment.
