The Washington University Student Experience Plan was a student engagement project that heard from students at the university about their experiences on campus, as part of a campus-wide planning effort undertaken by the school. Through both in-person workshops and a SMS-feedback system, students were able to directly tell the design team about their time on campus. The information we received linked emotion to physical space, telling the planning team how students felt at different areas and buildings on the campus.
Outreach Process
Workshops
Workshops in St. Louis brought together the design team with students, and produced physical maps showing how students felt on campus. Students placed stickers representing different emotions on the map where they felt those emotions.
SMS Feedback
Students also communicated to the design team through an SMS feedback system set up by Colloqate. Beacons on campus asked students to reach out to an automatic texting system which recorded their responses about emotions in space.
